Group Therapy

There is something powerful about discovering that you are not the only person who feels the way you do.

Many people feel nervous about the idea of Group Therapy. You might wonder whether you will be expected to share things before you are ready, whether you will feel comfortable talking in front of others, or whether your experiences will seem different from everyone else’s.

At Therapy of Mind, our groups are carefully facilitated to create a safe, respectful and supportive environment where you can participate at your own pace.

Group Therapy brings together people who may be navigating similar experiences or emotional challenges. Depending on the group, this might include anxiety, low mood, grief, relationship difficulties, confidence and self-esteem, men’s mental health, major life changes or simply feeling disconnected from yourself or others.

Our approach is grounded in Gestalt and relational therapy, with an emphasis on what happens between people in the here and now. Within the group, you may begin to notice how you respond to others, when you hold back, when you feel responsible for everybody else, how easily you express your needs and where familiar relationship patterns begin to appear.

And this is where Group Therapy can become incredibly valuable.

Other members can sometimes recognise something in us that we struggle to see ourselves. Hearing another person’s experience can help us understand our own, while being listened to and accepted by others can challenge deeply held beliefs about ourselves.

Over time, the group can become a place to experiment with doing things differently — speaking when you might usually stay quiet, setting a boundary, accepting support, expressing an emotion or simply allowing yourself to be seen without having to pretend that everything is fine.

Many people find that Group Therapy helps them feel less isolated, more confident in relationships and more comfortable expressing what they need. It can create a genuine sense of belonging while offering new perspectives and ways of responding to life’s difficulties.

You will never be expected to share more than you feel ready to, and confidentiality and respect are central to how our groups are run.
